TRDizin Determination of Changes in Soil Organic Carbon and Total Nitrogen Stocks under Different Stand Age of Kazdağı Fir (Abies nordmanniana subsp. equi-trojani (Steven) Spach)(2020-12-01) Gamze SAVACI; Temel SARIYILDIZMost of the carbon in forest ecosystems is stored in the forest litter and in the soil. Soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are, however, highly variable. Forest carbon stocks and fluxes vary with forest age, and relationships with forest age are often used to estimate fluxes for regional or national carbon inventories. Therefore, it is extremely important to determine the effect of stand age on SOC and TN stocks and the amount of tree species on the distribution. The objective of this study was to estimate SOC and TN stocks of Kazdağı fir (A. nordmanniana subsp. equi-trojani (Steven) Spach) in the northwest (Ilgaz) and northeast (Inebolu) of Kastamonu. Three sites of fir stand, aged 38, 57, 60, 66, 90, 100, 183, 250, 283 and 306 years were selected in pure fir forests. The results showed significant differences in the amounts of forest litter, SOC and TN stocks among the different stand ages. Kazdağı fir stands older than 100 years had much higher forest litter than the younger fir stands. The highest amount of forest litter was under the 306 years old fir stands (30.3 Mg ha-1) while the lowest amount of forest litter was under the 100 years old fir stands (3.95 Mg ha-1). When 0-30 cm soil depth was considered, the fir stands aged 100 and over generally showed higher SOC stocks than the fir stands younger than 100 years old, with the exception of 38 and 57 years old fir stands which had the highest SOC (166.7 Mg C ha-1). Similarly, for TN stocks, it was also seen that the fir stands aged 100 or over had higher TN stocks than the fir stands younger than 100 years old. Our results have indicated that the forest litter, SOC and TN stocks of fir stands are more dependent on stand age. Our results have indicated that the forest litter, SOC and TN stocks of fir stands are more dependent on stand age. On the other hand, air pollutants can affect growth and health of trees. We studied the impacts of air pollution caused by the iron - steel factory and dense traffic on leaf chemical composition and also tree tolerance to the air pollution using six tree species (Maple, Ash tree, Cypress, Black pine, Sycamore and Aspen).Material and Methods: The fresh leaf and needle sampling was carried out in April and July, and analyzed for photosynthetic pigments, peroxidation level, hydrogen peroxide, enzymatic antioxidants and non-enzymatic antioxidants.Main results : Although there were statistically significant variations in the studied chemical compositions of the fresh leaf and needle samples between the six tree species, the pollution types and time, each chemical factor acted different ways with the pollution types and time according to tree species. In general, the pigment values, MDA, H2O2 and APX, concentrations in July were lower than those in April, whereas CAT, SOD, proline and protein concentrations in July were higher than those in April. Maple tree was more resistant to the traffic pollution, while Ash tree was more tolerant to both the pollution types. Among all trees, Aspen was found more susceptible to the traffic pollutionResearch highlights: The results could be used in the future research directions to improve our understanding of the role of individual tree species in air pollution reduction and also set up a healthy, well managed urban forest which can provide many ecological benefits to urban environment.TRDizin Effects of Thinning on Litterfall Production and Leaf Litter Decomposition Rates of Karacabey Forested Wetlands, Bursa, Turkiye(2023-06-30) Temel SARIYILDIZ; Salih PARLAK; Oktay GÖNÜLTAŞ; Gamze SAVACIThe contribution of litterfall (dead leaves, twigs, etc., fallen to the ground) and forest floor (organic residues such as leaves, twigs, etc., in various stages of decomposition, on the top of the mineral soil) is fundamental in both forest ecosystem sustainability and soil greenhouse gases (GHG) exchange system with the atmosphere. A focus on forested wetlands is particularly important, as these systems account for a disproportionate amount of global carbon flux relative to their spatial coverage, and the decomposition of leaf litter is a major contributor. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of two different thinning treatments (low thinning-canopy closure 41-70% and intense thinning-canopy closure 10-40%) on litterfall, forest floor litter and leaf litter decomposition rates of alder (Alnus glutinosa) stands in Karacabey forested wetlands. The litterfall was monthly collected using open litterfall traps for 2 years from 2021 to 2022. The forest floor litter was also sampled 50 x 50 cm2 quadrates of 5 points in research plots of 20×20 m. The differences in leaf litter decomposition rates between the low and intense thinning stands were investigated using the litterbag method in the field for 18 months. The results indicated that the intense thinning significantly reduced the total litterfall production (7.24 ± 0.384 Mg ha-1) and the forest floor litter (2.78 ± 0.41 Mg ha-1) compared to the low thinning stand (10.8 ± 0.527 Mg ha-1 and (4.38 ± 0.82 Mg ha-1 respectively). Lower leaf litter decomposition rates were also seen in the intense thinning stands than in the lower thinning stands. At the end of the 18 months, the leaf litter mass loss was 83.6% in the intense thinning stands compared to the lower thinning stands (88.3%).TRDizin Farklı Orman Ağaç Türleri Altındaki Toprak Özelliklerinin ve Besin Stoklarının Yükselti, Bakı ve Toprak Derinliğine Göre Değişimi(2023-04-15) Temel SARIYILDIZ; Gamze SAVACIÇalışma toprak makro (C, N, P, K, Ca, Mg) ve mikro (Fe, Mn, Na, Cu, Zn, Al) besin stoklarına, yükselti, bakı ve ağaç türlerinin etkisini araştırmak için Kastamonu ili Daday ilçesi ormanlarında gerçekleştirilmiştir. OF HEAVY METAL CONCENTRATIONS IN SOIL CAUSED BY KASTAMONU CITY WILD STORAGE DUMPSITE(2020-10-01) Gamze SAVACI; Çağatay ÖKSÜZThe aim of this study was to reveal the effects of domestic dumpsite on the some soil chemical properties in the surface soils in Kastamonu city. The soil samples were collected from the 5 different distances namely; Very adjacent (VA), Adjacent (A), Middle (M), Far (F) and Very far (VF). The results showed that the accumulation of heavy metal in the soil varied significantly with the distances. Among the heavy metals, the concentrations of Co, Cr, Cu (only A and VA), Zn (only A and VA), Ni (except for M) exceeded the Maximum Allowable Limit (MAL) for Turkey values. However, the concentrations of Mo, Pb and Cd were below the MAL limit values. When all results are considered, it can be stated that the waste dumpsites can negatively affect the environment. Therefore, we make sure that the dumped materials should be concentrated and recycled in order to decrease the amount of heavy metals in the dumpsites and in the soils around the dumpsites. In addition, phytoremediation, which is all the remediation technique available for metal contaminated soils, is the most costly, environmentally friendly and easy to apply. Phytoremediation can be used to remove, displace or reduce contaminants from soil by using plants that hyperaccumulate these contaminants.TRDizin Kastamonu Yöresinde Farklı Arazi Kullanımının (Yaşlı ve Genç Göknar Meşcereleri-Mera-Tarım Alanları) Toprak Organik Karbon ve Toplam Azot Depolama Kapasitesine Etkileri(2017-09-01) Züleyha MARAL; Gamze SAVACI; Temel SARIYILDIZArazi kullanımı önemli derecede toprak özelliklerini etkilemekte ve uygun olmayan uygulamalar toprağın ve çevre kalitesinin bozulmasına yol açmaktadır. Araştırmada uzaktan algılama ve coğrafi bilgi sitemleri teknikleri kullanılarak ICONA (Institute for the COnservation of the NAture) modeli ile erozyon risk analizi yapılmıştır. ICONA Erozyon Risk Haritası, Toprak Erodibilitesi ile Toprak Koruma Haritalarının birbirleriyle çakıştırılması sonucu elde edilmiştir. NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) değerleri Landsat 5 TM uydu görüntüsü kullanılarak elde edilmiştir. Araştırmadan elde edilen sonuçlara göre, alanın % 53.67'sinin çok yüksek, % 38.1'inin yüksek, % 6.94'nün orta, % 1.17'sinin düşük ve % 0.12'sinin çok düşük erozyon riskine sahip olduğu tespit edilmiştir.TRDizin The Effects of Stand Development Stages on Soil Carbon and Nitrogen Stocks in Black Pine, Scots Pine and Fir Stands in Türkiye(2023-12-01) Gamze SAVACI; Yunus DOĞANThe influence of stand development stages on soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) stocks was examined in black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold.), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), and Kazdağı fir (Abies nordmanniana subsp. equi-trojanı (Aschers. & Sint. ex Boiss) Coode et Cullen), differing in the mean tree diameters in which reproduction stages (RS)=<8 cm, sapling or pole stages (SPS)= 8-19.9 cm, large pole stages (LPS)= 20-35.9 cm, and medium wood stages (MWS)=36-51.9 cm in three tree species located in northwestern Turkey. A total of 216 soil samples were collected and analyzed for pH, organic matter, bulk density, maximum water holding capacity, carbon, and nitrogen concentrations, and the SOC and TN stocks were calculated. SOC and TN stocks varied significantly among the four stand development stage classes. The SOC stock at 0-30 cm increased significantly due to an increase in the diameter of black stands (BPLPS and BPMWS). SOC stocks in all stand development stages peaked in the large pole (44.94 Mg/ha) and declined as the sapling or pole (37.71 Mg/ha) was replaced by medium wood stands (30.17 Mg/ha), and a low point (27.94 Mg/ha) was found in the reproduction stages of stand development for Scots pine. The TN stock at a soil depth of 0-30 cm ranged from 1.66 to 6.46 Mg/ha. The highest TN stock was observed in the SPSPS (6.46 Mg/ha) and FirRS (5.48 Mg/ha), and the lowest was observed in the BPLPS (1.66 Mg/ha) stands. The results illustrate that soil was the main storage of C and N in all different stand development stages of tree species.TRDizin The Effects of Windthrow Damage on Soil Properties in Scots Pine, Black Pine and Kazdağı Fir Stands in the Northwest Turkey(2021-03-01) Temel SARIYILDIZ; Ferhat KARA; Gamze SAVACI; Sadık ÇAĞLAR; Esra TOPALAim of study: The short-term effects of windthrow damage on soil properties were investigated in Kazdağı fir (Abies nordmanniana subsp. equi-trojani), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold.) stand in northwest Turkey. Area of study: The study was carried out in Kastamonu and Sinop regions. Material and methods: In order to understand the effects of windthrow damage occurred in 2013, soil samples were collected at a depth of 0-30 cm from the disturbed and undisturbed sites in 2018 (5 year later), and analyzed for soil physical and chemical properties. Main results: The increases in temperature, wind speed and heavy rainfall in the study sites seemed to result in the windthrows. There were significant differences in soil physical and chemical properties among the three tree species, and also between the disturbed and the undisturbed sites. Highlights: After the windthrows, increased SOC and TN stocks, P and K could be related to the accumulation of organic matter. However, we were not able to identify a single mechanism to explain this observed relationship. Thus, the root-soil interactions of the three tree species should be conclusively examined in future studies in order to define the relationships between soil chemical properties and root features.TRDizin Uludağ Göknarı (Abies nordmanniana subsp. bornmülleriana Mattf.) meşcerelerinin toprak organik karbon, toplam azot ve besin element konsantrasyonları ve stokları üzerinde bakı ve yükseltinin etkisi(2022-10-28) Temel SARIYILDIZ; Gamze SAVACI; Burhan GENCAL; Salih PARLAKTopografik yükselti ve bakının, Uludağ göknarının ölü örtü, toprak özellikleri, toprak organik karbon (TOK), toplam azot (TA) ve diğer toprak besin elementi (C, N Ca, Mg, P, K, S, Fe, Mn, Na, Cu, Zn, Cl, Ni ve Co) konsantrasyonları ve stoklarına etkilerini belirlemek amaçlı Bursa Uludağ Milli Parkı’nda bir çalışma gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bununla beraber, kesin bir sonuca varabilmek için daha fazla ağaç türlerini ve farklı yaşları kapsayan daha detaylı çalışmalara ihtiyaç bulunmaktadırTRDizin Variation in chemical compounds of walnut (Juglans regia L.) leaves with tree age(2020-11-01) Temel SARIYILDIZ; Gamze SAVACI; Nezahat TURFANIn this present study, we investigated the chemical compounds in the fresh leaves of ancient walnuttrees (Juglans regia L.) aged 25, 75, 100, and over 400 year. Under similar environmental conditions, the fresh leaves of walnut trees were collected and analysed for chlorophyll molecules as chlorophylla, chlorophyll b and carotenoids, enzymatic compounds (ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT)and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities) and non-enzymatic compounds (proline, total solubleprotein, total phenolic compounds), flavonoid and reducing sugars (glucose, sucrose, total solublesugar). In addition, the oxidative stress level was determined by measuring lipid peroxidation (MDAmalondialdehyde)and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Significant differences in the chemical compositionof the fresh leaves were found between the 4 different tree age classes. In general, the results showedthat mean chlorophyll pigments were increased with increasing the age. There was also a generaltrend that mean glucose and starch concentrations increased with the age, while mean sucroseconcentration decreased, but no changes were noted for mean total soluble carbohydrate. On theother hand, mean SOD concentration decreased with increasing the age. Other chemical compounds(mean proline, total soluble protein, malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, APX and CAT), however, did not show clear trends with the age. As a result, these pioneer study have provided valuable insightinto the variation in the chemical constituents of walnut tree leaves in relation to the age, and it canbe used to better understanding, managing and fighting against pathogens of walnut ecosystems infuture studies.
