Abstract

Green areas have been decreased or destroyed as the urbanization process accelerated due to the structural changes in economic, social, cultural and politic areas. As a result of those, creation of livable cities and restoration of urban ecosystems have become an essentiality. The terms related to forest and forestry 18 - 21 Nisan 2007 Ulusal Çevre Sempozyumu Mersin Üniversitesi Çevre Mühendisliği Bölümü Çiftlikköy Kampüsü, Mersin 2 have also been affected from this process and forest benefits and functions which the community expected, have been changed and other functions of forests other than the wood production have become more important. The term “Urban Forestry” which differs from the “Traditional Forestry” by service production and recreational uses, first used by Prof. John W. Andersen at Toronto University in 1965. Urban forests which have many properties to improve life quality in cities are new and at beginning stage in Turkey whereas they have advanced in developed countries. Public demand for forest that near cities where rapid urbanization in progress, have been increased due to the negative factors which adversely affect the psychology of people like air pollution, noise, traffic. Forest areas near the cities have been established as “Urban Forests” by the foundations of Turkish Environment and Forest Ministry in order to meet this demand. At the end of 2006, a total of 30 urban forests have been opened at various cities, and a total of 50 urban forests have been aimed in 2007.
