Scopus A 2-year aeropalynological survey of allergenic pollen in the atmosphere of Kastamonu, Turkey(2012-09-01) Çeter T.; Pinar N.M.; Güney K.; Yildiz A.; Aşci B.; Smith M.Knowledge of airborne pollen concentrations and the weather conditions influencing them is important for air quality forecasters, allergists and allergy sufferers. For this reason, a 7-day recording volumetric spore trap of the Hirst design was used for pollen monitoring between January 2006 and December 2007 in Kastamonu, Turkey. A total of 293,427 pollen grains belonging to 51 taxa were recorded during the study period. In the 2 years of study, the period March-August was identified as the main pollination season for Kastamonu. The highest monthly pollen counts were observed in May in both years. Six taxa made up 86.5% of the total amount of pollen recorded in the atmosphere of Kastamonu. These were as follows: Pinaceae (42.9%), Cupressaceae (20.6%), Poaceae (9.7%), Quercus (5.5%) Betula (5.3%) and Carpinus (2.6%). Four of these are considered to be highly allergenic (Betula, Carpinus, Cupressaceae and Poaceae). There were also a greater percentage of highly allergenic taxa found within the city, including Betula pendula that is not part of the local flora. This shows that through urban planting, the public and municipalities can unconsciously create a high risk for allergy sufferers. Daily average pollen counts from the six most frequently recorded pollen types were entered into Spearman's correlation analysis with meteorological data. Mean daily temperature, relative humidity, daily rainfall and wind speed were found to significantly (p < 0.05) affect atmospheric pollen concentrations, but the relationships between pollen concentrations and meteorological variables can vary and so there is a need for more local studies of this nature. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.Scopus Correlation between chlorophyll degradation and the amount of heavy metals found in pseudevernia furfuracea in kayseri (Turkey)(2011-06-14) Yildiz A.; Aksoy A.; Akbulut G.; Demirezen D.; Islek C.; Altuner E.M.; Duman F.Air pollution and associated heavy metal pollution, is an important environmental problem. One of the methods used to monitor heavy pollution in the air is the method of transplanting lichen samples by the bag technique. In this study, Pseudevernia furfuracea was used as a bioindicator to determine the heavy metal level of air pollution heavy metal level in Kayseri and to generate an air pollution map of the city. The lichen samples were collected from the Yaprakli̇ Mountains in Çanki̇ri̇ in 2002 and transplanted to 10 different stations in Kayseri. Lichen samples were re-collected at two different periods in three month intervals. Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometry was used to identify the heavy metals, such as Cu, Cd, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in the lichen samples. The chlorophyll a and b contents were determined by using the DMSO method. With these values chlorophyll a+b, a/b and b/a were also calculated. According to the heavy metal analysis results of Pseudevernia furfuracea, which worked well as a bioindicator, air pollution in Kayseri due to industry, heating and traffic was observed. The concentration of Cd at the 3rd and 9th station, Cu concentration at the 1st and 8th station, Mn concentration at the 3rd and 10th and Pb concentration at the 3rd, 8th and 10th station were considerably high. The study was carried out with nursing and medical students (N = 197). Research data was collected through semi-structured interview questions and 23 focus group interviews. The data was assessed using thematic analysis method. The themes were evaluated within the context of perception of death, ethical dilemmas, and, death education. To achieve professional competency in attitudes toward death, it is imperative to form a common educational curriculum and practice that would help students develop a mutual language and value system about death.
