Advancing and sustaining volunteerism: Investigating the multifaceted challenges and obstacles to volunteer engagement

Individuals across the globe engage in volunteering activities for various purposes, such as contributing to eradicating poverty, enhancing basic health and education, ensuring access to potable water and proper sanitation, addressing environmental concerns and climate change, mitigating disaster risks, and combating social exclusion and violent conflicts. The ongoing development and sustainability of volunteering are imperative to maintain progress and warrant attention. This study explores the impediments and challenges associated with the development and sustainability of volunteering, encompassing a broad spectrum of factors, from micro-level individual aspects to macro-level structural elements. Data were collected via in-depth interviews with 30 managers within the volunteering sector. The narratives were subjected to thematic analysis, leading to the identification and examination of four distinct themes at various levels. The primary findings underscore the significance of personal experiences, familial backgrounds, organizational structures, and the socio-political milieu in which they function for comprehending the challenges and barriers to volunteering. In conclusion, this study shows that there are wide-ranging and multidimensional challenges and barriers to the development and sustainability of volunteering activities. Therefore, analyzing these problems in coordination with the stakeholders of the volunteering field, making arrangements and developing practices may ensure the development of the volunteering field.

Assessing the Motives of Active Volunteers: A Turkish Perspective

This study aimed to measure the sociodemographic, economic, physical, psychological, and social characteristics of volunteers and the salient factors of their motivations for voluntary participation. The study employed a cross-sectional design and convenience sampling. Data were collected from 1046 volunteers working in eight non-governmental organizations in the field of child welfare. Specifically, a scale with ten factors of volunteer motivation was used to predict volunteer motivation within structural equation modeling. Questions were also asked to understand the relationship between volunteers' sociodemographic, economic, physical, psychological, and social characteristics and volunteering. The results show that the primary factors of recognition, reactivity, and understanding have the most significant positive effects on volunteer motivation, while social interaction has the least significant effect. Additionally, the diverse characteristics of volunteers were found to be an important source of motivation for them to volunteer. In conclusion, this research extends the existing literature and shed light on the main motivational processes that shape volunteering participation, considering the different characteristics of volunteers. Thus, understanding motivational factors can help to increase volunteer participation in Turkey.

Examining the Volunteering Perspectives of Individuals Participating in Child Welfare Volunteer Activities

Acts of volunteerism can be observed in schools, hospitals, and religious institutions, as well as and even more so in nearby streets and apartments. Volunteering behaviors mean different things in different societies based on economic, social, and cultural reasons. While volunteering may sometimes be perceived only as a philanthropic behavior, other times it is considered as the behaviors that contribute to economic development. The opinions of volunteers and administrators working in this field play a significant role in uncovering these meanings. In this context, the study aims to investigate the perceptions that volunteers and managers who participate in T & uuml;rkiye's child welfare volunteer activities have toward volunteering based on their experiences volunteering in this field. The field of child welfare is considered a source of intense participation in terms of volunteer work in T & uuml;rkiye. Therefore, this study has conducted in-depth interviews with 60 volunteers in the field of child welfare. The research has preferred the qualitative research method and phenomenological research design within its scope. The participants' narratives have been analyzed thematically, with three themes being identified and discussed in detail regarding their perspectives: the personal level, the family and social environment level, and the societal level. These themes reveal the importance of understanding how volunteering is perceived in T & uuml;rkiye. The research has concluded that individuals' personal experiences and the perspectives of family, friends, and the society in which one lives are able to affect one's perceptions about volunteering. Conducting future research on the subject as well as studies on areas where volunteering activities are frequently involved, such as elderly welfare, violence against women and women's rights, disaster situations, and how to protect the natural environment, may enable a more holistic perspective to be formed in order to reveal how volunteering efforts are perceived in different social services fields.
