Scopus Chaid and logistic regression approaches for assessing the effects of non-genetic factors on lamb mortality(2017-02-01) Topal M.; Emsen E.; Yağanoğlu A.M.Lamb output from the ewe flock is a key determinant of the profitability of sheep farming. Here, we assessed the association between various factors (ewe breed, month of birth, year of birth, birth type, lamb sex and lamb birth weight) on lamb mortality (within the first 60 days of life) using data collected in northern Turkey between 2006 and 2014. The study included a total of 1958 lambs, including the Romanov (R), Awassi (I), Kivircik (K), Tuj (T), Anarom (AN), R ×I (Romanov×Awassi), R×K (Romanov×Kivircik), R×A (Romanov×Akkaraman), R×M (Romanov×Morkaraman) and F1 Romanov (Romanov× Turkish native) breeds. CHAID (Chi -Square Automatic Interaction Detector) analysis correctly classified 99.2% of surviving lambs and 12.4% of dying lambs, while 100% of surviving lambs and no dying lambs were correctly classified by logistic regression analysis. CHAID and logistic regression analyses correctly determined 91.5% and 91.1% of lamb mortality, respectively. The most important variables for the estimation of lamb mortality in the CHAID and logistic regression models were month of birth and lamb breed. Based on our findings, we propose that the CHAID algorithm (AUC of 0.843) is better to classify lamb mortality than a logistic regression analysis approach (AUC of 0.613).Scopus Comparison of low-profile plate-screw and Kirschner-wire osteosynthesis outcomes in extra-articular unstable proximal phalangeal fractures(2019-04-09) Köse A.; Topal M.; Engin M.Ç.; Şencan A.; Dinçer R.; Baran T.Background: We aimed to present the radiological and clinical results of Kirschner-wire (K-wire) fixation and low-profile plate-screw fixation applied to unstable proximal phalangeal fractures without extension to the joint. Methods: Clinical and radiological data of 22 patients who underwent fixation with open reduction and low-profile 1.5-mm titanium mini plate and unlocked screws and 18 patients who underwent fixation with K-wire due to closed, unstable extra-articular proximal phalangeal fractures were retrospectively examined. All evaluation and statistical analyses were based on sixth postoperative month evaluation parameters. Active and passive metacarpophalangeal joint and interphalangeal joint range of motions, total joint range of motion, measurement of grip strength for fractured and healthy hands, visual analog scoring, disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand scores, measurement of distance between the pulpa and palmar curve in the operated finger, Belsky score, reoperation, and complications were evaluated. Results: Radiological union was achieved in all patients in a mean duration of 4.2 (3–6) weeks. When the functional results of the patients were evaluated, the mean active metacarpophalangeal joint flexion was 87.3° (75°–90°), mean proximal interphalangeal joint flexion was 94.3° (65°–100°), mean distal interphalangeal joint flexion was 77.6° (75°–80°), and mean total range of motion was 259° (210°–270°). The grip strength of the fractured hand was 52.7 (40–58) kgW, whereas that of the healthy hand was 54.4 (42–60) kgW. The mean value of visual analog score was 0.8 (0–2), mean score for disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand was 7 (2–27), and mean distance between the finger pulpa and finger curve was 3 (0–8) mm. Conclusion: Plate-screw osteosynthesis in the extra-articular, unstable fractures of the proximal phalanx, which is “small” compared with the body but has a “major function” for the hand and upper extremity, allows for rigid fixation, short immobilization, and early motion in spiral/oblique-fragmented fractures. K-wire fixation, an alternative treatment modality, applied to selected fracture patterns with appropriate indications can achieve good–excellent results radiologically and functionally.Scopus Comparison of quality characteristics in honey using grey relational analysis and principal component analysis methods(2018-02-01) Topal M.; Yağanoğlu A.M.Composition characteristics are taken into account to determine authenticity and quality of honey. This study used grey relational analysis and principal component analysis methods to identify the most important variables affecting quality of honey.Honey specimens from 20 different producers were obtained to determine quality characteristics. C4 % (0.787), glucose (0.753), moisture (0.731), F+G (0.712), fructose (0.685), acidity (0.605), brix (0.581), conductivity (0.580), δ13C honey (0.576), proline (0.571), pH (0.530), δ13Cprotein -honey (0.527), δ13C protein (0.516), Fructose -glucose ratio (0.507) and diastase number (0.490) were found to be the most important variables on quality of honey based on the mean values of grey relational coefficients of quality characteristics. Grey relational grade (GRG) calculated by using eight values obtained from principal component analysis of quality parameters showed that S6 (0.690) was the honey with the highest quality, while S16 (0.501) was the honey with the lowest quality.Scopus Comparison of total cost and outcomes between single-stage open reduction and Pemberton periacetabular osteotomy operation and two separate consecutive operations in treatment of bilateral developmental hip dysplasia in children at walking age(2020-05-01) Yilar S.; Topal M.; Zencirli K.; Köse M.; Ezirmik N.Open reduction and Pemberton periacetabular osteotomy (PPO) is one of the most preferred techniques for the treatment of developmental hip dyslaplasia (DDH) after the walking age. Performing the surgery as a one-stage operation or two separate consecutive operations is a controversial issue. In this study, we aimed to compare the outcomes, length of hospitalization and total cost between the patients whom had single-stage open reduction and PPO or two consecutive operations due to bilateral DDH in the walking age children. One hundred thirty patients with bilateral DDH had undergone open reduction and PPO for both hips. Seventy-five patients had one-stage open reduction and PPO for both of the hips, whereas 55 patients have two separate consecutive operations. Total time of exposure to anesthetics, blood loss and duration of operation were noted. Hospitalization period and total treatment costs were also noted for each patient. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups regarding the preoperative and postoperative AIs (P > 0.05). Comparing the total cost, length of hospitalization, exposure to anesthetics, perioperative blood loss, there was statistically significant difference between the groups (P < 0.005). Single-stage surgery had favorable outcomes. Major benefits of single-stage surgery for treatment of bilateral DDH are the reduced costs, anesthesia duration, intraoperative blood loss and hospitalization period. Also it can be presumed that prolonged immobilization can lead to loss of bone strength and resulting in fragility fractures. So single-stage open reduction and PPO for bilateral DDH can be preferred in experienced clinics.Scopus Controlled release and anti-proliferative effect of imatinib mesylate loaded sporopollenin microcapsules extracted from pollens of Betula pendula(2017-12-01) Sargin I.; Akyuz L.; Kaya M.; Tan G.; Ceter T.; Yildirim K.; Ertosun S.; Aydin G.H.; Topal M.Sporopollenin is a promising material for drug encapsulation due to its excellent properties; uniformity in size, non-toxicity, chemically and thermally resilient nature. Herein, morphologically intact sporopollenin microcapsules were extracted from Betula pendula pollens. Cancer therapeutic agent (imatinib mesylate) was loaded into the microcapsules. The encapsulation efficiency by passive loading technique was found to be 21.46%. Release behaviour of the drug from microcapsules was found to be biphasic, with an initial fast release followed by a slower rate of release. Imatinib mesylate release from the drug itself (control) was faster than from imatinib mesylate-loaded sporopollenin microcapsules. The release profiles for both free and entrapped drug samples were significantly slower and more controlled in PBS buffer (pH 7.4) than in HCl (pH 1.2) buffer. Cumulative drug release from IM-MES-loaded sporopollenin microcapsules was found to be 65% within 24 h for PBS, whereas release from the control was completed within 1 h. Also, a complete dissolution of control in HCl buffer was observed within first 30 min. MTT assay revealed that drug-loaded microcapsules were effective on WiDr human colon carcinoma cell line. B. pendula sporopollenin can be suggested as an effective carrier for oral delivery of imatinib mesylate.Scopus Corticosteroid, Platelet-Rich Plasma, and Ozone Injections for Sinus Tarsi Syndrome(2023-01-01) Toy S.; Tuncer K.; Topal M.; Aydın A.BACKGROUND: Sinus tarsi syndrome is characterized by permanent pain on the anterolateral side of the ankle due to chronic inflammation characterized by fibrotic tissue remnants and synovitis accumulation after repeated traumatic injuries. Few studies have documented the outcome of injection treatments for sinus tarsi syndrome. We sought to determine the effects of corticosteroid and local anesthetic (CLA), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and ozone injections on sinus tarsi syndrome. METHODS: Sixty patients with sinus tarsi syndrome were randomly divided into three treatment groups: CLA, PRP, and ozone injections. Outcome measures were visual analog scale, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Ankle-Hindfoot Scale (AOFAS), Foot Function Index, and Foot and Ankle Outcome Score before injection compared with 1, 3, and 6 months after injection. RESULTS: At the end of months 1, 3, and 6 after injection, significant improvements were observed in all three groups compared with baseline (P < .001 for all). At months 1 and 3, improvements in AOFAS scores were similar in the CLA and ozone groups; those in the PRP group were lower (P = .001 and P = .004, respectively). At month 1, improvements in Foot and Ankle Outcome Score were similar in the PRP and ozone groups and higher in the CLA group (P < .001). At 6-month follow-up, there were no significant differences in visual analog scale and Foot Function Index results among the groups (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: Ozone, CLA, or PRP injections could provide clinically significant functional improvement for at least 6 months in patients with sinus tarsi syndrome.Scopus Describing factors affecting birth weight and growth traits in hemsin lambs using decision tree methods(2020-06-01) Balta B.; Topal M.The main goal of this study was to determine the best decision tree algorithm in order to determine the effects of the birth type, herd type, main age, pasture type, sex and lamb color variables in the Hemsin lambs. These data, taken during certain periods of the Hemsin lambs, were subjected to simulation. The obtained data were evaluated by Classification and Regression Tree (CART), Boosting, Bagging (Bag) and Random Forest (RF) Decision Tree Algorithms. The best model of lamb birth weight, with the lowest Error Squares Mean (MSE) = 0.469, with the lowest Mean Absolute Error (MAE) = 0,471 with Random Forest and the lowest Symmetric Percentage Mean Absolute Error (SMAPE) = 3,63 The best model according to daily live weight increases of lambs, the lowest MSE (3620.67), MAE (4878.71) and SMAPE(4.80) values formed by Random Forest algorithm and the best model according to the daily live weight gain constructed by Random Forest (RF) algorithm. It was determined that the Bagging algorithm with the lowest MSE (970.09), MAE (1362.65) and SMAPE (3.03) was formed. Theachieved results showed that the best algorithm was Random Forest, follewed by Bagging algorithm.Scopus Determination of the physicochemical properties and 13C/12C isotope ratios of some honeys from the northeast Anatolia region of Turkey(2018-06-01) Cengiz M.M.; Tosun M.; Topal M.In the study, the honey was subjected to analyses after being taken from different producers immediately after the end of the production season. 13C/12C analysis was performed on the samples using an isotope ratio mass spectrometer (EA-IRMS) combined with an elemental analyzer. In all of the honey samples, the δ13C value was found to be more negative than −23.5‰ and even the C4 sugar ratio was found to be lower than 7%. The results from the physicochemical analysis of the samples were determined to be 15.9 ± 1.6% for the moisture content, 82.8 ± 1.1 for brix, 0.183 ± 0.02 mS/cm for conductivity, 24.4 ± 4.0 meq/kg for total acidity, 546 ± 80 mg/kg for proline, and 14.5 ± 3.5 for diastase activity. In addition, the sugar content was determined to be 38.8 ± 1.8% for fructose, 30.2 ± 1.7% for glucose, 69.1 ± 3.3% for fructose + glucose, and 1.29 ± 0.5 for fructose/glucose. When the analysis results were evaluated according to the relevant standards and codex, it was evident that the honey samples produced within the region are of very good quality.Scopus Effect of accreditation and certification on the quality management system: Analysis based on Turkish hospitals(2019-10-01) Yıldız M.S.; Öztürk Z.; Topal M.; Khan M.M.Scopus Effectiveness of virtual patient simulation versus peer simulation in family planning training in midwifery students: a comparative educational intervention(2022-01-01) Şimşek Çetinkaya Ş.; Gümüş Çalış G.; Kıbrıs Ş.; Topal M.This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of two simulation types used for family planning consultation of midwifery students and to compare these methods. This study was conducted at a university in Kastamonu, Turkey, in 2020–2021. The sample of the study was 90 midwifery students. The family planning skill training and communication skills of the students were evaluated by watching the video recordings in the virtual patient simulation (VPS) and under the supervision of the instructor in the peer simulation (PS). In each instructional environment, the students’ satisfactions were evaluated. Students’ Knowledge scores of family planning increased after web-based training (38.3%; 67.9%) The mean scores for communication skills (VPS = 72.1; PS = 63.7) were found higher in VPS and family planning counseling skills (VPS = 66.5; PS = 77.6) were found in PS (p <.01). As the education environments were getting more like the reality, the students’ not to used communication skills effectively and stress levels were found higher. VSP and PS are thought to be effective development of students’ competency. The use of different simulation types can be integrated into midwifery education and contribute to the development of students’ knowledge, skills, and communication levels.Scopus Impact of presence of ossific nucleus on results of closed reduction in treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (302 hips)(2021-03-01) Yilar S.; Köse M.; Tuncer K.; Karsan O.; Topal M.; Ezirmik N.Closed reduction is an effective treatment method for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Still, there are certain controversial issues regarding the timing of the treatment. In this study, we investigated the results of closed reduction and Outcomes of 302 hips of 218 patients treated with closed reduction have been analyzed retrospectively. One hundred fifty-two hips that had ossific nucleus [ossific nucleus (+)] during reduction have been compared with 150 hips that had no ossific nucleus [ossific nucleus (-)] during reduction. Also, the patients have been divided into two groups, the patients treated with closed reduction before the sixth month and the patients treated with closed reduction after the sixth month. Groups have been compared between themselves in terms of avascular necrosis (AVN) and redislocation. Seventy-seven of the 112 hips treated with closed reduction in the first six months were ossific nucleus (-), and AVN has been noted in 5 (6%) patients. However, although no AVN has been seen in any of the 35 ossific nucleus (+) hips, no statistically significant difference has been found between two groups. Seventy-three of the 190 hips treated with closed reduction after the sixth month were ossific nucleus (-), and AVN has been seen in 13 (17%) of these hips. AVN has been seen in 9 (7%) of the 117 ossific nucleus (+) hips. The AVN ratio was found significantly lower in the ossific nucleus (+) hips (P < 0.034). Although the presence of ossific nucleus does not provide extra protection against AVN in before the sixth month, the presence of ossific nucleus is protective against AVN after the sixth month.Scopus Is it the subcoracoid impingement or the subacromial impingement that tears the subscapularis tendon? A comparison of the MRI findings of the operated and healthy shoulders of the patients(2023-01-01) Çetinkaya M.; Kaptan A.Y.; Ulucaköy C.; Orhan Ö.; Topal M.; Ayanoğlu T.; Kanatli U.Background/aim: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the etiological factors accepted as causes of idiopathic subscapularis tears are true or not when the comparison is made with the opposite side healthy shoulder of the patients who underwent arthroscopic repair for an isolated subscapularis tear. Materials and methods: Sixteen patients who underwent shoulder arthroscopy between February 2016 and January 2018 and were diagnosed with isolated subscapularis tear were evaluated. The coracohumeral distance (CHDax), coracoid overlap (CO), and tuberculum minus cysts (TMC) were evaluated on the axial images of the MRI studies while the acromiohumeral distance (AHDsag), CHDsag, and subscapularis tendon slip number (STSN) on the sagittal oblique images and the AHDcor and SLAP lesion on the coronal oblique images. Degeneration of the coracoacromial ligament was evaluated during arthroscopy. Results: The mean CHDsag (11.26–10.08), CHDax (10.63–9.98), CO (14.2–15.43), AHDsag (8–7.66), and AHDcor (7.65–7.68) measurements (operated side-healthy side, respectively) were statistically similar (p > 0.05). No statistically significant difference was found between TMC and STSN in healthy and operated shoulders (p > 0.05). There was mild coracoacromial ligament fraying in 4 (25%) and obvious coracoacromial ligament fraying in 8 (50%) which indicated subacromial impingement in 75% of the patients. Conclusion: The parameters of the coracoid process did not reveal any significant difference between the operated (for an isolated subscapularis tear) and opposite-side healthy shoulders of the patients. However, coracoacromial ligament degeneration was present in 75% of the patients.Scopus Novel asymmetric biscarbothioamides as Alzheimer's disease associated cholinesterase inhibitors: synthesis, biological activity, and molecular docking studies(2024-06-03) Muğlu H.; Yakan H.; Erdoğan M.; Topal F.; Topal M.; Türkeş C.; Beydemir Ş.Scopus Outcomes of surgical management of acetabular fractures treated with anterior approaches(2019-10-01) Paksoy A.E.; Topal M.; Aydin A.; Zencirli K.; Kose A.; Yildiz V.Objective: In this study we aimed to evaluate the outcomes of anterior and combined approaches for treatment of acetabular fractures. Materials and Methods: Thirty-seven acetabular fractures in 35 patients treated with an anterior approach were evaluated retrospectively. Fractures were classified according to Judet-Letournel. Early and final radiological evaluation was based on Matta’s criteria. Modified Merle d'Aubigne and Postel criteria were used for functional assessment. Results: Eleven (30%) fractures were simple type and 26 (70%) were mixed type. Two (18%) of the simple fractures were transverse and 9(82%) were anterior column fractures. Fourteen (54%) of the mixed type fractures were both column fractures, 5 (19%) were transverse+posterior wall, 5 (19%) were T shaped and 2 (8%) were anterior column+posterior hemitransverse fractures. Surgical approach was ilioinguinal in 15 (43%) patients, Stoppa in 9 (26%) and combined11 (31%). Our functional outcomes were perfect in 10 (27%) hips, good in 20 (54%), moderate in 4 (10%) and poor in 3 (8%). Our radiological results were perfect in 15 (40.5%) hips, good in 15 (40.5%), moderate in 4 (11%) and poor in 3 (8%). Conclusion: Anterior surgical approaches provide satisfactory outcomes in appropriate fracture types. Posterior approach can be combined in certain fracture types. We think that rate of the requirement for a concomitant posterior approach for certain fractures of the acetabulum will decrease as experience increases.Scopus Peroneal palsy as a complication of developmental hip dysplasia surgery(2020-03-01) Topal M.; Aydın A.Nerve injuries are rare complications of surgical management of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Over-stretching can cause injuries of femoral, sciatic and peroneal nerves. In this report, we present a 6-year-old girl with Tönnis type IV bilateral DDH whose postoperative period was complicated with foot drop due to the breakage of the spica cast. Open reduction and Pemberton pericapsular osteotomies, high femoral osteotomies for derotation and shortening had been performed on both hips of the patient. Patient had been kept in a spica cast for six weeks. At the 6th week follow up visit it was observed that spica cast was broken at the knee. When the cast was removed foot drop was noted on left foot. Electromyoneurography (EMNG) revealed total axonal degeneration of the peroneal nerve at the level of the fibular head. The conservative therapy for 18 months failed to result in any improvement in common peroneal nerve function. Therefore, peroneal nerve decompression, neurolysis and posterior tibial tendon transfer had been performed. At the 4th year follow up visit the patient had active dorsiflexion of the ankle, no need for AFO and the foot was plantigrade and painless. We presented this case report in order to inform the orthopedic surgeons performing DDH surgeries about a possible complication of the spica cast and to emphasis the necessity of good care of the spica cast.Scopus Relationships between milk protein polymorphisms and production traits in cattle: A systematic review and meta-analysis(2018-05-24) Ozdemir M.; Kopuzlu S.; Topal M.; Bilgin O.C.Many researchers who have studied the relationships between milk protein polymorphisms and some yield traits in dairy cattle have reported incompatible results. In this study, in order to examine the overall relationships between milk protein genes known as major genes (CSN1S1, CSN2, CSN3, and BLG) and some yield traits (daily milk yield, lactation milk yield, fat yield, fat content, protein yield, and protein content), a meta-analysis was performed using some genetic models reported in the results of previous studies on cattle. The results suggest that the relationships of major milk protein genes with other factors should be studied using the codominant genetic model in general. Relationships among some CSN3 genotypes and fat yield, fat content, and protein content, and relationships between some BLG genotypes and daily milk yield, fat content, protein yield, and protein content were significant (P<0.05). No significant (P>0.05) relationships were found between these genotypes and other milk production traits. In addition, no significant (P>0.05) relationships between the CSN1S1 and CSN2 genotypes with the milk production traits examined were observed.Scopus Role of methemoglobin and carboxyhemoglobin levels in predicting COVID-19 prognosis: An observational study(2020-12-01) Oktem B.; Üzer F.; Kukul Güven F.; Kirhan İ.; Topal M.World Health Organization has declared coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) as a pandemic. Although there are studies about this novel virus, our knowledge is still limited. There is limited information about its diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. We aimed to investigate the effect of methemoglobin and carboxyhemoglobin levels on the prognosis of COVID-19. In this observational study, patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 during March 1-April 31, 2020 in a secondary-level state hospital in Turkey were included in the study. COVID-19 diagnosis was confirmed with reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction method, with nasal, oral or sputum specimens. During the period this study was performed, 3075 patients were tested for COVID-19 and 573 of them were hospitalized. Among the hospitalised patients, 23.2% (133) of them had a positive polymerase chain reaction result for COVID-19. A total of 125 patients, 66 (52.8%) males and 59 (47.2%) females, with an average age of 50.2 ± 19.8 years, were included in the study. The most common findings in chest radiogram were ground-glass areas and consolidations, while one-third of the patients had a normal chest radiogram. Computed thorax tomography was performed for 77.6% (97/125) of the patients. The 24.7% of computed tomographies (24/97) did not reveal any pathological findings, and the most common findings were ground-glass appearance and consolidation. Those who needed intensive care had statistically significantly lower platelet count (P = 0.011) and higher lactate dehydrogenase levels (P < 0.001). No statistically significant difference was found in carboxyhemoglobin (P = 0.395) and methemoglobin (P = 1.000) levels. We found that carboxyhemoglobin and methemoglobin levels had no effect on COVID-19 prognosis, but low platelet level played a role in predicting COVID-19 prognosis. This study was approved by the Ethical Committee of Harran University Faculty of Medicine on May 11, 2020 with approval No. 09.Scopus Simultaneous versus staged surgeries for the treatment of bilateral developmental hip dysplasia in walking age: A comparison of complications and outcomes(2021-01-01) Köse M.; Yılar S.; Topal M.; Tuncer K.; Aydın A.; Zencirli K.Objectives: This study aims to compare the radiological outcomes and rate of complication between single-stage and staged operation for the treatment of bilateral developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Patients and methods: A total of 100 patients (13 males, 87 females; mean age: 18.1±2.1 months; range, 12 to 36 months) with bilateral DDH who were older than 15 months of age and treated with open reduction (OR) or Pemberton pericapsular osteotomy (PPO) were retrospectively analyzed. Of the patients, 48 were operated with OR and 52 were operated with PPO. Improvements in acetabular indices, presence of avascular necrosis, radiological results, and other complications were noted. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the preoperative acetabular indices, range of International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) classification, follow-up period, and age at the time of operation between the groups (p>0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the acetabular indices, rate of avascular necrosis, and radiological results at the end of 24 months of follow-up between the groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Our study results show no significant difference in the radiological outcomes and complications between simultaneous and staged surgeries for the treatment of bilateral DDH in children in the walking age.Scopus Surgical management of displaced adolescent tillaux fractures with the mini-open technique(2021-01-01) Ayas M.S.; Köse A.; Terzi E.; Dincer R.; Topal M.; Uymur E.Y.; Şahin A.BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on the optimal treatment of Tillaux-Chaput fractures. The results of our cases treated with mini-open surgery (open reduction and internal fixation) concerning efficacy and complications, we aim to compare other procedures (open, percutaneous, and arthroscopy-assisted) with the literature data and to look for an answer to the question of whether the primary treatment can be mini-open surgery. METHODS: Between the years 2014 and 2017, 22 of 30 patients with Tillaux-Chaput fractures were treated using mini-open sur-gery, open reduction and internal fixation with one cannulated screw. These cases were retrospectively examined concerning age, sex, side, surgery duration, complications, and American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Score (AOFAS). Functional results were statistically evaluated 12 months after the injury. Follow-up included a clinical examination, imaging and AOFAS. RESULTS: Of the patients, 14 were male (63.6%) and eight were female (36.4%). The mean age of the patients was 13.8 years. The mean surgery duration was 21 minutes. All fractures healed after an average of 14 weeks. No complications were observed in any of the cases. The mean follow-up time was 24.7 months. The mean preoperative AOFAS score was 53.3 and the mean postoperative AOFAS score was 93.6, which was a statistically significant difference. At the last follow-up, the AOFAS score was perfect for all cases. CONCLUSION: Contrary to what is stated in the literature, the mini-open surgical procedure has many advantages. The operation is very short and the risk of nerve injury is very low. This study showed that Tillaux-Chaput fractures could be safely and efficiently treated with mini-open surgery. We recommend mini-open surgery, complete anatomical reduction, and internal fixation for successful results.Scopus Surgical management of Rockwood type 3 acromioclavicular joint injuries: a retrospective comparison of outcomes of suture anchor fixation and double-button fixation techniques(2020-05-22) Topal M.; Köse A.The treatment of type 3 acromioclavicular joint injuries has still controversial issues. In this retrospective study, we aimed to compare the radiological and functional outcomes of the suture anchor and double-button fixation methods for the treatment of type 3 acromioclavicular joint injuries. This study included 20 patients who underwent suture anchor (9 patients) and double-button fixations (11 patients) for isolated type 3 acromioclavicular dislocation. Injuries were classified according to the Rockwood Classification System. Coracoclavicular(CC) distances and anterior translation have been measured pre-operatively and at the 12th month follow-up. Functional evaluation was performed using the DASH, and Constant-Murley scores of the patients were recorded at the12th-month follow-up.The mean age of the patients was 37 (22-50) years in Group 1(double-button group) and 39 (24-56) years in Group 2(suture anchor group). All of the patients were male. There was no statistically significant difference between the DASH and Constant-Murley scores of the 2 groups (P > .05). The mean DASH score of the patients evaluated at the postoperative 12th month was 6.65 (0-38.3) in Group 1 and 2.48 (0-4.2) in Group 2. The mean Constant-Murley score of the patients evaluated at the postoperative 12th month was 89,6 (50-98) in Group 1 and 93,6 (90-98) in Group 2. Comparison of the pre- and post-operative CC distances and pre- and post-operative anterior translation distances of both groups revealed that there was no statistically significant difference between groups regarding postoperative CC distances and anterior translation distances (P > .05).Suture anchor and double-button techniques are reliable treatment methods that are not superior to one another and can yield excellent functional outcomes.
