Scopus Clonal variation in growth, flowering and cone production in a seed orchard of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in Turkey(2009-09-01) Sivacioǧlu A.; Ayan S.; Çelik D.A.In this study, observations and measurements were made on five grafts for each of 30 clones in three successive years (2006, 2007 and 2008) on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seed orchard established in 1995 by using 2 years-old grafts in Turkey. The examined characters were total height, diameter at base, number of branches, length of terminal shoot, length of lateral shoot, length of longest branch, number of male whorls, number of male flowers in a whorl, number of male flowers, length of male whorl, number of female flowers, cone number and crown diameter. Variation, broad-sense heritability and correlations between characters were estimated. Variation among clones was lower than among grafts for all studied characters. The broad sense heritability varied in a range of 0.15-0.38 for growth related characters, while it varied in a range of 0.15-0.59 for flowering related characters. The genetic variation for female and male flowering number is 36.5% and 82.8%, respectively. The number of flowers increased with the graft size. Significant correlations between the growth and flowering related characters varied in a range of 0.20-0.59 and 0.17-0.26 for male and female flowering, respectively. © 2009 Academic Journals.Scopus Evaluation of seed production of scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) clonal seed orchard with cone analysis method(2008-12-17) Sivacioǧlu A.; Ayan S.This research was carried out to investigate seed production in a 13 years-old scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) clonal seed orchard, including 30 clones. Eight of cone and seed traits as number of fertile and infertile scales, cone volume, cone number, filled and empty seed number, seed efficiency and 1000 seed weight were studied. Significant differences existed between the clones in all traits. The overall mean of fertile scale number was 30.1 with a range of 19.8 to 42.2 among the clones while infertile scale number was 41.1 with a range of 34.1 to 51.5. Overall mean of filled seed number, empty seed number and filled seed percentage was 11.6, 15.0 and 43.6%, respectively. The cone number and cone volume varied 33.4 to 287.88 and 6.6 to 18.2 cm3 among the clones, respectively. The average seed efficiency for all clones was rather low and 17.9%. The overall mean of 1000 seed weight was found 10.9 g with a range of 8.6 to 13.2 g. As to 1000 seed weight and filled seed number values, 0.68-19.33 kg of filled seeds per hectare varying among the clones can be produced in this orchard. The cluster dendrogram produced two groups; 18, 27, 26, 30 numbered clones in the first group and the others. © 2008 Academic Journals.Scopus Genetic variation in seed and cone characteristics in a clonal seed orchard of scots pine (Pinus sylvestis L.) grown in Kastamonu-Turkey(2010-11-01) Sivacioǧlu A.Cone and seed characteristics of scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were investigated in a clonal seed orchard for 2006. The orchard was established in 1995 in an area of 7.2 ha, at Taşköprü/Kastamonu, northern Turkey and includes 30 clones. The results showed that significant genetic variation exists among clones for cone wet weight and dry weight; cone width and length; total, fertile and infertile scale number; total, sound and empty seed number; 1000 seed weight; apophysis length, width and thickness; seed length and width; wing length and width; seed potential, seed efficiency and cone volume. Coefficients of variation within clones were mostly bigger than among clones, indicating high variation within the population. The respective broad sense heritability values of clone mean basis for cone dry weight, cone width, 1000 seed weight were 0.59, 0.58 and 0.57. The broad sense heritability and variation data obtained in this study are very valuable in the management practices of the existing Scots pine clonal seed orchards and can be also used for better planning of advanced generation of clonal seed orchards in Turkey. © 2010 University of Bucharest.
