Scopus An assessment of metal pollution in surface sediments of Seyhan dam by using enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index and statistical analyses(2009-01-01) Çevik F.; Göksu M.; Derici O.; Findik O.The aim of this study was to determine if high concentrations of any heavy metals exist in the sediment of Seyhan Dam reservoir to be considered toxic to the aquatic environment. Surface sediment samples from five stations in the Seyhan dam were collected quarterly from 2004 to 2005 and examined for metal content (Cr, Zn Cu, Mn, Cd, Fe, Ca, K, and Na), organic matter, and grain size. Correlation analyses showed that metal content of Seyhan dam sediment was affected by organic matter and grain size. The results have been compared with values given in the literature. The evaluation of the metal pollution status of the dam was carried out by using the enrichment factor and the geoaccumulation index. A comparison with sediment quality guideline values has also been made. Based on the enrichment factor, dam sediments were treated as a moderately severe enrichment with Cd and minor enrichment with Cr and Mn. The results of geoaccumulation index reveal that sediments of Seyhan Dam were strongly polluted in stations 1, 2, 4, and 5, and were moderately polluted in station 3 with Cd. Moreover, Cd and Cr concentrations in the sediments were above TECs except ERL for Cd. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2008.Scopus Metal concentrations in surface sediments of Beyler reservoir (Turkey)(2012-02-01) Findik O.; Turan M.The accumulation of metals (Iron, Aluminium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Boron, Chromium, Nickel, Cadmium, Lead) was seasonally (November 2009 to July 2010) measured in sediment samples taken from different areas of Beyler reservoir which is an important water source for irrigation in West Black Sea region (Turkey). Metals in sediment samples were analyzed by ICP-OES. The difference between the stations except for Zn metal (p < 0.05) has not been considered as important and a statistical difference between seasons for Fe, Ni metals (p < 0.01) and Cu metal (p < 0.05) has been observed. The magnitude of metal concentrations in sediment was determined as Aluminium > Iron > Manganese > Zinc > Chromium > Copper > Boron > Nickel > Lead > Cadmium. Enrichment factor (EF) for all metals has been calculated (EF < 1). In the evaluation done by considering the EF values, it is seen that the metal concentrations found in the Beyler Dam Lake sediment stem from the natural composition of the sediment. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.Scopus Metal concentrations in two bioindicator fish species, Merlangius merlangus, Mullus barbatus, captured from the west black sea coasts (Bartin) of Turkey(2011-10-01) Findik O.; Çiçek E.The Black Sea is very vulnerable to originating from land based human activities and its health is equally dependent on the coastal and non-coastal states of its basin. Total concentrations of cadmium, copper, zinc, lead, nickel, aluminum, iron, manganese, boron and chromium concentrations were determined in Merlangius merlangus (whiting) and Mullus barbatus found in Amasra in the West Coast of the Black Sea (Turkey). The metal contents that were measured in head and muscle was expressed in μg g -1 wet weight. On average, while the highest Fe (344.25 μg g -1), Mn (10.35 μg g -1), Cr (0.96 μg g -1) and Al (76.77 μg g -1) concentrations were measured in the heads of M. merlangus and the highest Zn (77.99 μg g -1), Cu(8.53 μg g -1), B (44.83 μg g -1), Ni (1.96 μg g -1), Cd (0.40 μg g -1) and Pb (6.80 μg g -1) concentrations were detected in the muscles of M. merlangus. There were significant differences between metal levels of muscles in these two species. In terms of permissible levels reported by WHO FAO and TSE, there is not any risk for human consumption for both M. merlangus and M. barbatus, for Pb. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
