Scopus Effects of grape Vitis vinifera seed oil supplementation on growth, survival, fatty acid profiles, antioxidant contents and blood parameters in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss(2018-06-01) Arslan G.; Sönmez A.; Yank T.In this study, effects of grape Vitis vinifera seed oil supplementation (0, 250 mg, 500 mg, 1,000 mg/kg feed) for 60 days on rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss juveniles were investigated. The average final fish weights were not different between the control group and 500 mg/kg feed group (p >.05), but 250 mg/kg feed group were lower than those of the control group, and 1,000 mg/kg feed group were higher than those of the control group. Although the SFA, MUFA and n3 ratios of the control group were higher than that of the other groups, no statistical difference was found. The highest fatty acids in the fish were palmitic acid C 16: 0 in the SFA group and C 18: 1n-9 and docosahexaenoic acid C 22: 6n-3 in the PUFA group. The EPA ratio was significantly increased in all groups compared with the control group. The DHA ratio was significantly higher in the control group than in the experimental groups, and there was no difference between the experimental groups. Urea were significantly lower in the 250 mg/kg feed group. Total protein and aspartate aminotransferase were significantly increased in the 1,000 mg/kg feed group. Only the 1,000 mg/kg feed group showed an increase in antioxidant activities, and this concentration also yielded positive results in terms of growth performance, survival rates, fatty acid composition and antioxidant enzyme activities in rainbow trout juvenile and can be used as a natural feed additive.Scopus Metals in two species of fish in Karasu River(2012-12-01) Sönmez A.Y.; Yaganoglu A.M.; Arslan G.; Hisar O.In this study, cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) levels were determined in the tissues (muscle, liver and gills) of two fish species, Capoeta capoeta umbla and Chalcalburnus mosullensis, collected from three stations of the Karasu River. The lowest metal accumulation was detected in the muscle tissues. Moreover there was some variability in the metal concentrations measured in the same tissues from samples obtained from the three different stations. A positive correlation was observed for the concentration of metal pairs Fe-Cu, Fe-Zn, Ni-Pb, Pb-Zn. These findings were also compared with national and international food standards, and Pb and Cd concentrations were determined to be above the level set by the standards. In conclusion, it was supposed that excessive consumption of these two fish species, which already occurs in this region, might pose a public health risk. © Springer Science+Business Media New York 2012.Scopus Mucus from different fish species alleviates carrageenan-induced inflammatory paw edema in rats(2020-10-01) Hitit M.; Corum O.; Ozbek M.; Uney K.; Terzi E.; Arslan G.; Sonmez A.Objective: To determine the anti-inflammatory effects of mucus obtained from different fish species on the carrageenan-induced acute paw edema in rats. Methods: Forty-two rats were randomly divided into seven groups. Acute paw edema was induced by 0.1 mL of 1% carrageenan, and a single dose of diclofenac and lyophilized mucus (25 mg/kg) of rainbow trout, brook trout, European sea bass, and gilthead sea bream were administered to rats through gastric gavage 1 h before carrageenan treatment. Rat paws were measured before and 1-4 h after carrageenan treatment. The mRNA expressions of cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and TGF-β), antioxidant markers (catalase and superoxide dismutase), and COX-2 were investigated using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The histopathological changes were evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin staining. Results: The inhibition percentage of carrageenan-induced paw edema by different fish mucus ranged from 52.46% to 74.86% at 4 h. Histopathological evaluation showed that all fish mucus diminished carrageenan-induced edema and inflammatory cell infiltration. The upregulation of IL-1β mRNA induced by carrageenan was decreased by the mucus of rainbow trout and gilthead sea bream while an increase in the expression of IL-6 mRNA was reduced by the mucus of rainbow trout, brook trout, and gilthead sea bream. In addition, the mRNA expression of superoxide dismutase was higher in the rainbow trout mucus group than the carrageenan group. Conclusions: Mucus obtained from different fish species may have anti-inflammatory effects.Scopus Predicting the distribution of green turtle nesting sites over the Mediterranean with outcoming climate driven changes(2023-02-01) Arslan G.; Ertürk A.; Candan O.Nesting beaches have a critical role in the life cycle of sea turtles and their survival. Many different factors affect nest site selection, ranging from the composition of the sand to the vegetation of the beach. These factors are subject to change due to the onset of climate change. We aimed to determine the possible changes in nesting beaches according to the future climate scenarios of Chelonia mydas nesting sites in the Mediterranean by ecological niche modeling. Nineteen bioclimatic variables and Representative Concentration Pathway scenarios (RCP2.6 and RCP8.5) were used to generate past, current, and future nesting site projections. The datasets were prepared with ArcGIS v10. and bioclimatic variables were analyzed using the Pearson Correlation Analysis. The ecological niche modeling was made with the MaxEnt v4.1.0. Model outputs, mean temperature of warmest quarter (22.01 %), precipitation of coldest quarter (15.32 %), mean temperature of the driest quarter (13.60 %), isothermality (12.30 %), mean diurnal range (9.22 %), the max temperature of the warmest month (6.60 %), precipitation seasonality (5.87 %) and annual mean temperature (4.73 %) are the parameters that most affect the estimated distribution of the species and the other parameters have the least effect on the estimated distribution (each < 2.60 %). The prediction accuracy of the model is measured by the Area Under the Curve (AUC) values, which is between 0 and 1, where values closer to 1 have a greater prediction accuracy. In our model results, the AUC values vary between 0.961 and 0.990. The majority of current green turtle nesting sites will continue to be suitable for nesting into the 2100′s. But the habitat suitability of the current nesting beaches in Syria and Lebanon will decrease. Conservational efforts should be developed to protect not only the current nesting beaches but also other possible nesting beaches that might become viable in the future.Scopus Preparation and characterisation of biodegradable pollen-chitosan microcapsules and its application in heavy metal removal(2015-02-01) Sargin I.; Kaya M.; Arslan G.; Baran T.; Ceter T.Biosorbents have been widely used in heavy metal removal. New resources should be exploited to develop more efficient biosorbents. This study reports the preparation of three novel chitosan microcapsules from pollens of three common, wind-pollinated plants (Acer negundo, Cupressus sempervirens and Populus nigra). The microcapsules were characterized (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy and elemental analysis) and used in removal of heavy metal ions: Cd(II), Cr(III), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II). Their sorption capacities were compared to those of cross-linked chitosan beads without pollen grains. C. sempervirens-chitosan microcapsules exhibited better performance (Cd(II): 65.98; Cu(II): 67.10 and Zn(II): 49.55mgg-1) than the other microcapsules and the cross-linked beads. A. negundo-chitosan microcapsules were more efficient in Cr(III) (70.40mgg-1) removal. P. nigra-chitosan microcapsules were found to be less efficient. Chitosan-pollen microcapsules (except P. nigra-chitosan microcapsules) can be used in heavy metal removal.Scopus Trend analysis and forecasting of the Gökırmak River streamflow (Turkey)(2020-09-01) Arslan G.; Kale S.; Sönmez A.Y.The objective of this paper is to determine the trend and to estimate the streamflow of the Gökırmak River. The possible trend of the streamflow was forecasted using an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. Time series and trend analyses were performed using monthly streamflow data for the period between 1999 and 2014. Pettitt's change point analysis was employed to detect the time of change for historical streamflow time series. Kendall's tau and Spearman's rho tests were also conducted. The results of the change point analysis determined the change point as 2008. The time series analysis showed that the streamflow of the river had a decreasing trend from the past to the present. Results of the trend analysis forecasted a decreasing trend for the streamflow in the future. The decreasing trend in the streamflow may be related to climate change. This paper provides preliminary knowledge of the streamflow trend for the Gökırmak River.
